“What’s Delaying My Dinner?”
Found while looking up the history of Impact font.  Wikipedia didn’t really have much to say about it, but i’m interested why it became the font of choice for internet image macro memes.  Is it simply because it’s easy to read over a picture? Or does it also imply a kind of tone? The same tone that can be found on 4chan? I’m also concerned about how cats feel about their embarrassing images being used for our continual pleasure and enjoyment.  Maybe LOLCATS are comforting to us because we still have some primal fears and suspicion about cats.

I hope somebody makes a movie about Obama’s life soon because I could play him… That’s the goal. I watch all the addresses. Any time I see him on TV, I don’t change the channel. I definitely pay attention and listen to the inflections of his voice. If you ask anyone who knows me, I’m pretty good at impressions.

this has been one of my favorite staples to play at cool hipster parties for a while.  people always ask me what it is, and some people usually ask me when i’m going to start playing danceable music, even though this is at 120 bpm and is totally disco and i think of it as a really good way to start the party…i’ve always thought it was a little darker than most disco songs, so it’s nice to mix with something really cute like “lovefool” or “pyt” or something.

anyways, the weeknd song “life of the party” is totally referring to this song, and i was really excited when put the two together.

“outside” by the weeknd is obviously a take on the cults song, but you probably already knew that.

what other great references are hidden in weeknd songs????????

trying to figure out what a dj is, what a dj can be, what are the limits of being a dj?

i know it’s just an open ended label in our society, like artist or male, and i like that those are fluid and changing terms that become more exciting when the boudaries are extended.  but can so many clashing ideologies can exist under the same umbrella?  why haven’t we come up with new terminology to separate and define the different ways that people play recorded music for an audience, now that there are almost infinite ways to do that?

maybe we preserve the term dj because the etymology of “disc jockey” (first recorded in 1941 by walter winchell about martin block’s “make believe ballrooms”) is an example of the reclamation of a term that began as a cynical criticism.  maybe it’s because of the “jockey” part, which in the 40’s could be anyone who operated a piece of machinery, but has it’s roots in things like minstrels as well as trickery and mischief, lending itself nicely to someone who tricks people, which is essentially what the first djs were doing.  creating a false experience, which they were criticized for initially, but that evolved into something that was widely accepted and celebrated.

the “disc” part only really makes sense if the dj is using records or cds, although i guess one could think about it as a “disk” jockey, as in hard disk memory storage…

it’s that false experience that i think we’re all so attached to, that’s the part that fascinates me.  a dj can be someone who just plays music in the background, the person who decides what music gets played at cvs or starbucks, or they can be an entire experience, someone who does much more than just play other people’s music, but tries to communicate an entire philosophy through not just music, but by creating an experience that allows for a dialogue between participants.  symbiotic relationship where the dj has as much to gain as the audience, where both feed off of each other.

the newest and most problematic thing for me recently has been the recording of mixes to be played on headphones, probably at your computer, probably in the background while you’re doing homework/havingsex/making dinner.
